Straw Homes – Straw Bale Construction - The Daily Green

Have you ever wanted to build a home out of alternative materials? Have you ever considered straw bales? Yes straw bales. They insulate your home very well and your walls will be at least 12 inches thick. The R value of the insulation will shoot way up, meaning it will cost less to heat and cool your space. Take a look at the homes in the link below, I think you might be suprised.

There are books available to teach about this style and other alternative building products. The only real way we can really improve the effeciency of energy loss/gain between our homes and the environment is to better insulate our homes. The thicker the walls (with appropriate materials i.e. straw bales, rammed earth, ICF's, recycled blue jeans etc), the better they are insulated and the lower your utility bills. If you add in either wind or solar panels your electric bills could be almost -0-.

Take a look, you might find some inspiring ideas.
