Waste-to-Energy From the Inside - Earth911.com
Have you ever wondered what happens to all that trash you have thrown away? This idea is one that I hope spreads around the world and especially in the Northeast where cities have a dense population. Making energy from trash could help eliminate one problem that continues to escalate every minute of every day... non recycleable trash that is taking up space.
I give Waste Management a thumbs up for stepping up and developing the waste incerators to energy plants. We need a lot moreof them and I hope they are successful enough that every city incorporates this idea as an enegy alternative.

Eco Cooking Tip
How would you like to reduce the amount of energy you use while cooking in an oven or on a stovetop? Well this simple tip can reduce your cooking time by close to 1/3. Ready? Put a lid on it! Yes, it is that simple. By putting a lid on your pan/skillet, you can cut your cooking time by almost a third of your normal cooking time. The end result is the same, plus you use less energy.
Another bonus to using a lid while cooking, is that you can actually turn of your energy source when it is 90% cooked. Keeping the lid on will finish cooking your item AND you use less energy.
Try it. It's a challenge.

my town
How has your town changed during the recent "Green Movement" ? The town I live in is Pensacola, FL. Much to my surprise the city of Pensacola now has curbside recycling. According to their stats, curbside recycling is growing by about 5000 customers per month. Plus they are now accepting even more items for recycling i.e. glass, pizza boxes and more!
After living here for 10 years, to see them take this one step is a major improvement. I actually have hope for a cleaner, greener future for our area!

Sustainability and Aesthetics
Hi all,
I have a question- how come a lot of the sustainability houses such as "Earthships" or projects are soooooo unattractive? I saw a couple houses in which bottles were used extensively throughout the house and yet it was unattractive or dare I say... ugly.
Look you can build a house recyclying glass throught the design and make it look fantastic. It doesn't take much (or maybe it should) to plan things out to make them aesthetically appealing. The fact is that if we want mainstream America or the world for that matter, to get fully behind the idea of a sustainable life, then it is going to have to appeal to the most basic principle- style. Yes, I wrote style. If there isn't any eyecandy appeal to your design, people will disregard your design or they will move on. Even if it is the most kick-ass design around, if it doesn't look good- people won't be interested.
So how about it people, let's start making sustainable housing and sustainable designs more visually appealing!

Living in Balance
It doesn’t matter if you are spiritual, a bible thumper or a pagan, the fact is that we here on planet Earth are out of balance with nature.
Granted there are a few of us who are making the effort to live in balance with Nature. To those folks, I say thank you. Thank you because you are doing something that I believe a lot more of us, actually all of us- need to be doing.
We humans have been abusing the Earth for more generations than we care to admit. Instead of traveling down the path that will lead to a symbiosis between mankind and nature, we took many short cuts. Which in turn harmed the Earth and now the Earth is fighting back- we have more severe weather patterns. These weather patterns are now more severe than any other time in our recorded history.
Because we took so many short cuts, we now have to deal with pollution in more ways than any of us need. I recently read that a large portion of our water sources contain mercury. In case you don’t know, that’s a bad thing.
The end result of us being out of balance with nature is that nature reacts to what we do to it. Now we have many species that are now extinct and many more that are on the verge of being extinct. Once they are gone, that’s all folks- we’ll never see them again.
Not only have our get-r-done as quick as possible attitude affected the animals, it is now affecting our environment in ways that may soon be deadly for us. Our winters are becoming colder our summers are hotter and our storms are a lot more intense.
We need to reach a level sustainability that many are afraid of. What are they afraid of? Well living sustainably requires effort and judging by our ever expanding waistlines, some of us are either afraid of exertion or we are lazier than we want to admit.
The simplest thing that we can do is recycle. Never in our history has recycling been easier. Many communities now offer curbside pickup. In my area, you don’t even have to separate your items [however I do it anyway.] Just by doing this one step, you are helping keep millions of pounds of items that are reusable out of valuable landspace. By recycling some items that won’t decay for thousands of years, you are helping the Earth maintain a better balance. Recycling helps keep our landfills cleaner. I can hear you now- cleaner? By keeping our landfills ‘cleaner’ we help the Earth get back some balance- a balance that will benefit all of us sooner than later.
A ‘balanced earth’ helps to produce ideal soil for growing food. Something I think all of us would agree is a good thing.
So, what do you say? Can we create a balanced Earth?

Why Greening China is a National Priority - Earth911.com
There have been a lot of negative stories about products coming from China. Our reality is that our politicians have allowed production to shift away from the USA. Until the USA brings back production to our shores we will continue to have a need for products from China.
Which brings be to the eco revolution that is taking place around the world. Currently China is kicking every ones butt in the race to produce eco friendly products and products that are used in building in an eco friendly manner. i.e. solar panels. Instead of us bitching and moaning about the fact we may fall behind in this race, learn from what they are doing and make it better here in the USA. The greening of the world is of the utmost importance for mankind to continue to exist.
If we want to be a world leader as president Obama suggests, we need to work with China. They have a headstart and as I stated earlier we can learn from them and improve their designs. We have brilliant people in all parts of the USA and if our government actually moves in the direction of living in a sustainable manner we CAN be a world leader and NOT a world follower.

1.25 Gigawatts of Solar Thermal Power Approved in California in Past Two Days Will Double US Capacity : TreeHugger
This article talks about how one solar farm in California will actually double the USA's solar productuion! What an amazing concept. The downside is that there still is a possibility that it could be blocked by the public. The other downside is that will take three years to complete. Hopefully during that three year period solar panel technology and effeciency will greatly improve making this solar farm even more valuable.
Now if only all of the available renewable energy producing enities would work together, we could be become energy independent. There are so many available renewable resources vying for supremacy in energy production, that we the people may left waiting. If there is any way that all of these entities can work together to make us stronger and energy independent, I hope that it happens.
Some people wonder which entity to back so that we become energy independent sooner. Well my friend, there really isn't one that will work for all. So I say develope all of them so that we all can reach the same goal- energy independence.

Straw Homes – Straw Bale Construction - The Daily Green
Have you ever wanted to build a home out of alternative materials? Have you ever considered straw bales? Yes straw bales. They insulate your home very well and your walls will be at least 12 inches thick. The R value of the insulation will shoot way up, meaning it will cost less to heat and cool your space. Take a look at the homes in the link below, I think you might be suprised.
There are books available to teach about this style and other alternative building products. The only real way we can really improve the effeciency of energy loss/gain between our homes and the environment is to better insulate our homes. The thicker the walls (with appropriate materials i.e. straw bales, rammed earth, ICF's, recycled blue jeans etc), the better they are insulated and the lower your utility bills. If you add in either wind or solar panels your electric bills could be almost -0-.
Take a look, you might find some inspiring ideas.

The eStar - eStar Electric Vehicle
This all electric delivery vehicle could be the start of something really great! This particular delivery truck travels up to 100 miles per charge. Just imagine how much of a difference a fleet of these would make in CO2 pollution. Yes I know, the electricity it takes to charge them up also pollutes. However, consider the possibility of parking/charging garage with both wind turbines and solar panels charging the trucks. THAT could be a game changer.
According to their website they also are fully upgradeable. So any advances in battery technology can be easily installed making this an investment for all of our futures. Hey DHL, FedEx, UPS and USPS have you taken a look or better yet- put in your order? I think you should!!

Michigan Solar Panel Factory's Labor-Intensive Assembly Tasks Moved To Mexico : TreeHugger
This article helps explain why the United States of America will continue to fall behind in the sustainability field. If big business continues to outsource their production, Made in the USA will be a thing of the past.
I remember from my youth when made in the USA was something to be proud of. We were leaders of the world with our high quality products. Once manufacturing went outside of our borders, the quality of the merchandise we buy has deteriorated.
Jeep has a great American commercil talking about American pride in their products. I applaud them for trying to bring pride back to America.
If we are to be a REAL world leader, we have to bring production back to our shores and stop giving tax breaks to companies who go outside the USA for our products. I say that NAFTA needs to be rexamined or changed completely, then maybe- the USA will be strong AGAIN!

VW Loads New American Car Factory with Exciting Green Technology
I am very happy to see that Volkswagon is really building one of the most eco friendly buildings to date. Their new assembly plant has a lot of great technology that allows them to have zero waste.
To me this makes me a little proud that we are slowly winning the battle of energy independence. The sooner that the United States of America becomes an energy independent nation, the sooner that we will have a thriving economy AND we will be living in a healthier world.
We could have a thriving economy right if two things were legal. The first thing that would make the United States of America energy independent and a thriving economy is industrial hemp. The biofuel alone generated is more than enough to power our nation AND its a renewable resource that can be grown in EVERY part of this country. There are an estimated 25,000 or more products that could be made from this plant. Just imagine the wealth that could be gernerated here in the United States of America and that money could be spent on products and services made in the USA with Pride!
The second that would make the United States of America a thriving economy is the taxation, regulation and standardizing of America's number one cash crop- marijuana. We all can benefit either directly or indirectly from this product. Look whether you're for against this product, it is your choice. It is like the choice of alcohol- you're either for it or against it. The choice is the same for marijuana. Either way, through taxation of the plant we all will benefit.
I realize that I strayed away from giving VW props for it's actions, but for some reason the other stuff came out for a reason. Perhaps one of you is the right person to read this message.

6 Busted Eco Myths - Earth911.com
Have you ever thought that being Eco Friendly takes too much effort? I know that I have heard that from a few people. I even tried to explain the benefits of being Eco Friendly to those same people. What I found out, was that "those people" had already made up their mind and that they weren't about to change it any time soon.
Some people say that people of a certain age don't take part in being Eco Friendly. What I have found is that it is people of all ages and all nationalities who choose not to be supportive. There isn't just one group that can be stereo-typed as being non eco friendly. People either are or they aren't. There doesn't seem to be very many middle of the road people.
If you are one of the "middle of the road" people, please read the article linked below. You will find info about how easy it is to be Eco Friendly.

6 natural remedies that really work - Alternative medicine- msnbc.com
Here are six more reasons why living in an all natural and eco friendly manner, is better for you and the world at large. Give it a read. I know that I was personally suprised at how many health benefits there are from foods that i already eat.
i'll be checking to see if i have any parsley in my cupboard. i eat onions on a regular basis, so now that i know that parsley basically neutralizes onion odors, i will be adding it to a lot of my foods. as for chili peppers, well i eat different varities of that wooonderful food ingredient on a regular basis as well. i love mexican food and it's many varieties at least once a week.
anyway, i guess finding out that just by eating certain foods, you are doing your body some good is a bonus to your life energy. you are helping your body, the grocer you buy the foods from, the farmer they buy from and the seed guy that the farmer buys from. it's just good stuff happening by doing one simple thing- eating good stuff.

Renewable Energy for Your Home
Have you ever wanted to power your home using Renewable Energy? Do you think it's not available in your area? Well the Environmental Protection Agency has a tool that shows you what areas are using renewable/Alternative Energy to fuel the local utility company.
After you click on this link, just select your state and a popup will show you the available alternative energy programs in your state.
The reality is that on average you will end up paying $0.02 more per kWh (kilo watt hour) than the standard charge. However if you do sign-up, you will have peace of mind knowing that you are making a difference.
I realize that a lot of us are watching our money these days, however if you can afford the extra charge on your electric bill, you will be sending a good message. That message is that you care about the environment and you support the alternative fuel/energy way of life. After-all, living in an Eco Friendly manner is a lifestyle.
This way of life is one that I choose for myself, how about you?

California Unanimously passes Strictest building codes in the USA
It looks as though California is taking the lead on Eco Friendly building practices. Starting next January, any new home, business or hospital building will have more strict codes to follow. I realize that those within the construction industry will complain about the new codes, but that is because the new codes are new. In two years they won't remember why they were complaining.
I hope that this is just the beginning of our Eco Friendly revolution. The sooner that this way of life becomes the everyday norm, the sooner we start to repair the years of destructive practices that are so common now.

Hemp for Victory movie
This is the classic Hemp for Victory movie from 1942 that was made by OUR Government. The movie was made to inspire our farmers to grow Industrial Hemp to help the USA win WWII.
Without the use of Industrial Hemp many of our fighting men and women would not have had proper shoes to wear. There some reports that say that their uniforms, most Naval riggins, most parachute riggings and more was made from Industrial Hemp.
With today's technology, many experts predict that there could be over 20,000 different products that could be made from Industrial Hemp. All of these diiferent uses and the plant could help clear our atmospere of the dangerous chemicals that have been emitted by so many different industries.
Hemp is the one and only yearly renewable resource that could be utilized to make us energy independent and yet fill ALL of our needs for paper, textiles, building products and so much more. If the USA is to become completely energy independent, Industrial Hemp will need to be one of the components to help us to reach that destination.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox. The movie is nearly 11 minutes in length. When you are watching, please keep in mind that this is from 1942. With modern technology, the processing would be much faster and the monetary value would be in the BILLIONS. Can you say no deficit?

Why China and Europe Invest More in US Wind Power than the US Does : TreeHugger
This article helps explain why U.S. banks are dropping the ball and keeping the U.S.A. from becoming a world leader in developing wind power technology. Why China and Europe Invest More in US Wind Power than the US Does : TreeHugger
If the USA is to become a world leader in renewable energy technology, we the people are going to have to demad it. The more that we demand it, the more big busine- including banks, will finally get a clue. The USA should be a world leader in renewable energy technology. If we fail at this endeavor, we will continue to be enslaved to foreign countries to power America. This needs to change.
For the USA to stand tall and become strong with a strong economy and low unemployment, we have to become a world leader in renewable energy technology. This is not a time to be fickle. Let's be bold and have some pride about Made in the USA products.

Rick Simpson Hemp Medicine Guru
For those people not familiar with Rick Simpson, I'll just repost some of the info that I have found.
Rick Simpson - Cancer Cure
this interview is HIGHLY recommended! A Film By Christian Laurette - After a serious head injury in 1997, Rick Simpson sought relief from his medical condition through the use of medicinal hemp oil. When Rick discovered that the hemp oil (with its high concentration of T.H.C.) cured cancers and other illnesses, he tried to share it with as many people as he could free of charge - curing and controlling literally hundreds of people's illnesses... but when the story went public, the long arm of the law snatched the medicine - leaving potentially thousands of people without their cancer treatments - and leaving Rick with unconsitutional charges of possessing and trafficking marijuana! Canada is in the middle of a CANCER EPIDEMIC! Meet the people who were not allowed to testify on Rick's behalf at the Supreme Court of Canada's Infamous Rick Simpson Trial on September 10, 2007... INCLUDING A MAN WHO WAS CURED OF TERMINAL CANCER USING HEMP OIL! IF YOU SEE ONLY ONE DOCUMENTARY THIS YEAR... MAKE IT THIS ONE! video link.
I found this information to be amazing and it made me hopeful. How or rather why? Well, if enough people starting seeking this medicine and demading that it be made available, maybe just maybe it would actually become available for those who need the help.
Look into this, it may just save your life or someone you love.
